When Good Skincare Stops Working

Most people find me after another clinic told them their skin was fine. They'd been going for months. Bought the good skincare, followed the plan, did everything asked of them. Then the results just stopped. The skin plateaued, the spending didn't, and no one could explain why.
If that's you, here's the good news: it isn't a you problem. It's a treatment problem. Once you understand what's happening underneath, it stops feeling like a mystery.
A plateau is information
A plateau is your skin telling you the treatment stopped short of the cause. Skin responds to whatever you throw at it, at least for a while. New products, a new facial, a fresh routine, and things look better fast. That early win is real. It's also the surface responding, which is the layer that changes quickest and fades quickest, too. When the surface has done all it can and nothing underneath has shifted, progress stalls. That's your plateau. It isn't your skin being difficult. It's your skin waiting for someone to treat the underlying cause.
Why surface-only treatment runs out of road
Most clinics treat what they can see. Congestion, redness, whatever turned up uninvited. There's nothing wrong with that on its own. The problem is stopping there. Your skin is the output, not the input. What shows up on the surface is usually driven by something deeper: a compromised barrier, hormones, stress load, or a routine so complicated it's doing more damage than the concern you're trying to fix. Treat the surface and ignore the driver, and you'll get the same result on repeat. A short lift, then a stall.
What treating the cause looks like
I go the other way. I look for what's driving the skin before I decide how to treat it. Sometimes that means changing the treatment. More often, it means changing the plan around the treatment, including what you're doing at home. That last part matters more than most people are told. Your skin spends roughly one hour a month in a treatment room and the rest of its life with you. If you don't know how to look after it between appointments, you're leaning on those few hours to carry everything.

The role of good skincare that no one teaches you
Here's what most clinics leave out: I teach you how to run your skin at home. Not a shelf of products you'll abandon by week three, but a plan you understand, so your results hold when you're nowhere near my treatment room. This doesn't replace professional skin treatments, but it does improve their results because when you know why you're using something and what it's doing, you stop guessing. You stop panic-buying whatever the internet told you this week. Your skin gets consistency, which is the thing it wanted all along.
So, if you've plateaued
A plateau isn't the end of the road. It's a sign you've outgrown surface-level treatment, and you're ready for someone to look properly. Twenty years in this industry has taught me to tell the difference between skin that needs another treatment and skin that needs a different plan. Most of the time, it's the plan. If your results have stalled and no one's been able to tell you why, that's exactly the kind of skin I like to get my hands on.
